The Job

Circus Software Corporate Headquarters

Circus Software Headquarters (At least till the end of summer)

The company I worked for was Circus Software. They were a small startup company developing software for Real Estate agents. When I said small company, I really meant that too. They hired one other intern besides myself, and we about doubled the size of the company. It was a legit company though (or at least my paychecks did not bounce). The people who worked there were really nice to work with. For being such a small company they had a couple of really smart people employed. I actually got to work on code that would go into a shipping product, which was pretty cool, but also kind of scary that my code would actually be used by people outside of professors grading my project.

After my past summer jobs partaking in manual labor either on a golf course or landscaping, it was quite a change to sit front of a computer all day programming and call it a job. I was able to suck it up through and handle this difficult adjustment. Air conditioning vs. sweating in the sun. I am happy to report that I was able to adapt to these changes.

This was also the first summer where I would be primarily working with people whose native language was English. No Español for me. I would also miss out on the horrible farmers' tan I had received from working outside the past summers. Again, another difficult adjustment.

And why, are you wondering, did some small startup company in Minnesota seek to hire interns from a small engineering college in the armpit of Indiana 600 miles away? Well, one of the employees was a Rose-Hulman grad, so he contacted Rose to look for people, and that was how I heard about them, got an interview, and eventually a job. So apparently all of those "alumni benefits" and the like that career services always talks about were actually paying off.
