The House

Alpha Delta Phi House

ΑΔΦ House

Working in Minneapolis over the summer implied that I would also be living there. Living there implies that I needed a place to live (I did not feel like sleeping in my car). Now, since the company was quite small, they did not exactly have huge dorms or anything for summer interns to live in, unlike other companies [External Link]. And since I knew absolutely no one in this region, that meant I would have to have to be renting some type of place. Now for those of you who have not looked, let me tell you that finding three month leases was almost impossible. My boss looked all over (he was a real estate agent too), and the only thing he could find was one place that wanted a four month commitment at $1000/mo + utilities! Now I was being paid pretty well, but that was a little steep for me. No point in having every dollar I earned go towards housing. Luckily though, my boss knew someone who was associated with the ΑΔΦ [External Link] fraternity at the University of Minnesota [External Link]. So after some last minute finagling I was able to rent out one of their rooms for the summer for a a price significantly less than any other place.

My Room

My room for the summer

Now anyone who knows me (which you actually might if you are actually spending the time reading this), knows that I was not exactly a fraternity type guy. I do not think that there is anything wrong with them, but I just do not fit in very well in that kind of atmosphere. As a result, I was a little apprehensive about living there. Luckily though, my fears proved to be unfounded. First off, there were not a lot of people in the house over the summer. Probably half of the people living there were borders like myself, just renting for the summer. The people who were there though, seemed to be really good guys (and a couple of chicks). They BBQed on a fairly regular basis and were pretty fun to hang out with. Nothing too wild occurred either (at least nothing that I saw). It was really no worse than living the dorms my freshman and sophomore year.

The infamous kitchen

The "clean" kitchen

Of course being a frat house with a bunch of guys, keeping everything super clean was not always a top priority. Now I was not a clean freak or anything, but some things did get pretty bad. The kitchen and bathrooms were probably the worst. They got pretty grungy, but as long as I watched where I put stuff down, I was okay. I also did not contract any strange diseases like Monkey Pox [External Link] or the Plague, so that was always a plus. Despite some messes, everything was still usable though. Of course the fact that I was living there only for a summer really helped.
